WHERE DID JOHN WAYNE GET HIS NICKNAME
DUKE ?
Back when John Wayne first came to California from
Winterset, Iowa with His Family they lived out on the
Mojave Desert Northeast of Los Angeles.
At that time Marion was just a Young Boy and had to Ride
His Old Sway-Back Mare that He loved Very Much, 5 Miles
to School everyday with His Big Hairy Airedale Dog
tagging along behind Marion and His horse .
He would leave His Horse and His Airedale Dog at the
Local Fire House with the Firemen there, and when He got
out of School in the Afternoon He would Ride
His Mare 5
Miles Back Home with His Airedale Dog Still

Tagging Along.
THE DOG'S NAME WAS
"DUKE"
=======
The Firemen at the Fire House Called The Airedale Dog
"BIG DUKE"
=========
and Marion
"LITTLE DUKE"
=============
And the Name Stuck With the Young Marion, because He
Did Not Like The Name Marion at all.
So from that Time On He was Called Little Duke, and then
when Little Duke Grew Up to Over SIX Feet Four Inches
Tall, THE LITTLE was Dropped and His Nickname was
"DUKE" From That Time On !!!
